P-Day - Handicapped of Ghana
We only get one weekend every three weeks to ‘catch up’ and dress like normal people and today was supposed to be that quiet and contemplative day when the building and grounds are empty and we can read, write, ponder, talk and relax without staff, teachers, cooks, maintenance people, missionaries, gardeners, laundry lady - just the two of us – one day every twenty-one is not too much to ask, is it? Well, look who dropped in...
The Handicapped of Ghana were having their 25th anniversary celebration and had 620 of their members in Tema for this Silver Jubilee anniversary. Carolyn and I were sitting under our ‘mango tree’ - alone - quietly reading when this fellow dropped by and asked if some of their participants could come over and use our new basketball court and soccer field for some handicap sports - we knew what the Savior would have said, so we invited them to come...50 to 80 were the stated number who would come – when the last trailed in 220 plus were on the grounds. We got so crowded and overwhelmed with bodies and wheelchairs (mostly church donated wheel chairs) that we forgot to take any pictures of the entire group – this caption was early shot before everyone heard about the new activity center the Mormon Church had just opened – everybody come – and they did.
Michael Jordon and his companions - these guys were incredible with their wheelchairs...really amazing...
The Champions
Their soccer team mostly played on one leg but were really amazing. Incredibly amazing...
They look great coming from the church don't they? Where are the missionaries? Let's start teaching these great young people and make a habit out of this.
All my life I have been chosen last for the teams, I got all ready thinking this was one team that might need me, but still nobody chose me...
